Psychedelic Therapy
Psychedelic-assisted therapy for depression, anxiety, addictions, and PTSD is being research now more intensively than ever before. Studies thus far show promising evidence for the use of MDMA in the treatment of PTSD, as well as psilocybin and LSD in the treatment of depression, anxiety, and addictions. These substances are safe in appropriate doses and in a supportive treatment setting. Psychedelics can help the patient to loosen up rigid neuronal connections which contribute to negative thinking, brooding, lack of interest, and social withdrawal. Particularly in combination with psychotherapy, they can help to create space for new perceptions, experiences and behaviours.
In Switzerland, psychedelic-assisted therapy can already be done legally. Off and on since 1988, and continuously since 2014, the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health has been able to authorise therapy with LSD, psilocybin and MDMA under the exceptional medical use program. The program is only available to Swiss residents and remains small for now, pending more research. But for people with treatment-resistant conditions like depression, anxiety, and some other mental health problems, psychedelic therapy may be an effective and legal alternative. We are proud to be a small part of the psychedelic therapy landscape in Switzerland.
Our lab is interested in how psychedelic therapy can work when other treatments fail. Current studies are focused on how psychedelics help people process difficult or traumatic memories safely (the “helioscope effect“), the importance of relaxation and feeling safe during treatment, and which environmental factors positively impact treatment outcomes.
